Russian conductor’s concert gets canceled due to political pressure
Gergiev, one of Russia’s most prominent musicians, was slated to perform with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Salerno at the Un’Estate da RE festival in Caserta on July 27. The cancellation was announced by the management of the Royal Palace of Caserta on Monday. Although no official explanation was provided, the decision came after criticism from European Union officials, Ukrainian communities, and supporters of Kyiv surfaced soon after the concert was publicized.
Italy’s Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli praised the cancellation, describing it as an expression of “common sense and moral responsibility aimed at protecting the values of the free world.”
Gergiev has been a controversial figure since refusing to condemn Russia’s military campaign against Ukraine. His stance led to his removal from the Munich Philharmonic and bans on his performances throughout Western countries since 2022.
Last month, the European Parliament Vice President called for Gergiev to be replaced for the event, echoing widespread calls from Ukrainian supporters across Europe to cancel the concert. Local media also reported that Ukrainian and Russian opposition activists planned to protest during the scheduled performance.
