Malta Snap Election Sees Labour Party Favored for Fourth Term

(MENAFN) Malta went to the polls on Saturday in a snap parliamentary election, with the ruling Labour Party widely expected to secure a fourth consecutive term, according to reports.

More than 340,000 registered voters are eligible to choose members of parliament for the next five-year term, with preliminary results expected on Sunday.

Opinion polls suggest the governing Labour Party, led by Prime Minister Robert Abela, is on course to make history by winning an unprecedented fourth straight mandate.

Abela has pledged to continue implementing reforms and to guide the country through ongoing global challenges, pointing to his government’s response to the pandemic and recent international instability.

In contrast, opposition leader Alex Borg, 30, who has only recently taken charge of the Nationalist Party, is campaigning on promises of political renewal and a shift in national direction.

According to local media reports, the snap vote was called amid growing concerns over global energy and security developments, following months of speculation about an early election.

Malta is divided into 13 electoral districts, each electing five or six members of parliament depending on population size.
